The Radical Virgo is Price-Less!

All Kindle and PDF Ebooks Now US $2.99 - $4.99

Dear Radical Readers,

The world has rarely needed healing as much as it does now. Since my Astro-specialty has long been the healer-centaur planet Chiron, I'd like to do my part to make my books more accessible by offering them at a lower cost. This price reduction also commemorates my semi-retirement from astrology--at least for now because I never say never. My astrology books will hopefully help people heal with insights. My fiction book, The Crystal Ball, has astrological overtones and info, too. It may help heal with laughter as well as giving you some tips about longevity, healing and helping others. It is also seasoned with some more information about Chiron. My favorite among my Astro books is Keywords to Unlock Chiron, which delves deeply into Chiron's various symbolism in a way that will help you find your custom resonance to his teachings. (See sidebar for purchase information.)

Chiron: The Myth About Duality

As a dual being, Chiron is about self-integration. There were two types of centaurs, the wild ones who had no control over their beastly ways, and the wise teacher-mentor Chiron. Chiron's dual body represents heaven in his upper body closer to the stars,

The Education of Achilles by Chiron

and earth in his lower, animal/horse nature. We incarnate in the image of All That Is. We bring the spark of heaven to earth. Chiron became more spark than horsing around in a no-kidding kind of way. (The wild centaurs raped, pillaged and destroyed everything in sight, presumably just for the fun of it.)

The difference between Chiron and his wild look-alikes was the way he grew from traumatic issues, such as dual parental abandonment and looking like a freak. Chiron developed his upper half (thinking, spiritual side) and used the best of his animal nature to work with what earth has to offer: herbs, medicine and "taming the wild beast" by teaching adolescents on Mt. Pelion to channel their masculine energy into life-affirming activities and to honor the environment. He balanced his light/dark, heaven/earth nature and evolved into the best composite of both.

Chiron: Sign of the Times

Today we see an awful lot of wild centaurs in the news creating mayhem from plain meanness to gun violence and senseless wars.  People spew us/them hatred like it might solve anything or make them happy. I can barely read the news as a sensitive empath. What we are witnessing today is the intensification of darkness before the light. It's like a boil. The healing can't happen until it pops and the infection oozes out. (Sorry for the eww metaphor for the weak of stomach. It just fits so well.)

Unfortunately, we see the world through a limited window. Think of life as a parade passing by your home that you see through the glass in your living room. We only see the part of the parade that's passing by now, not all that came by before now or how it will march on and conclude after we are gone.

We need integration on all levels to turn humanity into wise beings who thrive on the best of their dual nature. As with many things psychological, the light/dark or heaven/earth duality often gets played out by projection. The people, governments or things we hate are often a projection of our own darkness that we don't own.

The Prescription

In Chiron's story, he did the hard work of self-integration. When we are balanced within ourselves and love ourselves no matter what the world thinks of us, we become heroes. We give birth to one more lover and one less hater in the world. Chiron's school on Mt. Pelion was for the development of heroes as he mentored Jason, Hercules and many other mythological notables. Ask yourself often, "Why does this thing about ___ bother me so much?" Discover what inside of you that you may not be owning, may need to integrate, and do it with compassion for yourselves and others.

One of the most potent ways we we can heal our world is to start with what we actually have the power to change--ourselves. I hope my work in some small way helps feed the divine domino effect of a world with more Chirons and fewer half-horses gone mad. In no way am I downplaying the importance of getting involved in various practical and direct ways of making the world a better place. Everything you do adds to the momentum. Some people have a gift for making a difference in the community and world and the passion and energy to do it. Their love and enthusiasm is contagious.

How we evoke change most is by example. Chiron was above all a teacher. May you never stop knowing the hundreds of ways you help others just by being yourself.

Be at one--with yourself--to be at One with all.

Every blessing,
Joyce

Uncomfortable Beauty

 A  Winter Solstice Poem

Poem © 2021 by Joyce Mason

We dread Winter Solstice.

It cuts Day to the chase.

It delivers us long-suffering nights.

It steals Warmth

and leaves behind Darkness,

bleak feelings that remind us intuitively

of Death.

Winter comfort demands feats of acrobatic energy:

piling clothes, blankets and firewood,

clapping or blowing on our hands,

jumping up and down

just to keep our blood running.

Winter is one of the closest things to dying

we will experience until we do.

(We say frozen stiff for a reason.)

The Lucky will know many winters.

To find the beauty in struggling with the elements

And any force bigger than ourselves,

we first have to admit;

Comfort is overrated.

Comfort is an oasis, a place we must visit

as long and often as possible to be healthy and happy.

But to live there—to move in permanently—

is more than decadent.

It is decay.

Winter’s perishable beauty reminds us:

constant renewal is Beauty’s core.

You cannot have rebirth without death

or warmth without cold.

Contrast gives these things meaning.

Everything beautiful thing is transient.

Each unique snowflake melts

before we can barely take in its geometric perfection.

Together flakes form blankets,

soft white coating on landscapes

that hold your breath.

Winter takes simple substances like water,

freezes it, and turns it into diamonds.

The same winter cold that drives us inside and inward,

defines uncomfortable beauty.

From this cold we seek the warmth of Love.

When our breath is frosted air

we are close to the cutting edge of Life

where beauty lives,

we want to tell each other how we feel

to say “I love you”

one last time,

or perhaps even for the first,

before it’s too late.

The Other Side of the Reset Button

What’s Up with The Radical Virgo, the Person and Blog

Everything: My Dream Catcher

Where Did I Go?

It has been two years since I posted my last major update, Completion. I have been largely absent on The Radical Virgo except for quarterly Solstice and Equinox poems. This year, so far, I haven’t even managed to do all of those …

but for a good and still very surprising reason to me which I will soon reveal. What a story, even for an old storyteller like me. My absence has been for many good reasons. It has taken time for me to deal with the death of my husband (June 2019) as well as the exhaustion of caring for him, soon followed by eye surgery and slower than usual healing curve (December 2019 – March 2020). No sooner was I starting to get out of confinement to go places and do things when Covid hit. I was grounded again.

What Next?

For those of you with a good dollop of Virgo and/or other Earth signs in your chart (I’m Triple Earth), I’m sure you know that the figurative version of being grounded is one of our best qualities, a characteristic others often admire.

Grounding is what keeps life real and keeps us out of our heads where we often get into trouble if we hang out there too long, what-iffing, ruminating and painting scary scenarios in the empty space of not having answers.

While I was quarantined without much else to do, I contemplated my next leg of life. Even with all that energy freed and after many long weeks of racking my brain, I got nothing. Bupkis. I am visionary, yet I just couldn’t see it. My inability to glimpse or even sense my future made me wonder if I had one. Was I done and leaving planet soon? Joining Tim for another mystical reunion?

If You Need Information, Go to the Library.

In July 2020, a magical guided meditation finally gave me a cosmic hint about what was next. I had almost grasped the answer before but could not quite believe it was a realistic possibility. After my husband passed, it was a natural impulse to want to travel home more often to the Midwest—to spend time with my extended family, something I had been unable to do for years as Tim’s caregiver.  During these trips, I started fantasizing about becoming bi-municipal and having a condo in Chicagoland as well as my home in Rocklin. Surely I could not consider living in Illinois full-time with the deep friendships and much better weather I had in California, especially not after living there 48 years. I also had arthritis and aging to consider in my climate choices. Besides, how could I leave the home Tim and I bought and shared together in a stand of ancient oaks, my tree house of nature and nurture?

At the time I was doing live meditations online with Andrew Johnson, a Scottish teacher I first encountered through my meditation app, Insight Timer. He has a wonderful one called the Library Meditation. (I recommend it and him highly.) Very condensed and oversimplified version: You enter the library, put your stuff down, grab a book and bring it to your spot. You sit down and look at the title. Mine read The Cusp of Everything. It blew me away. I didn’t even open the imaginary book to see if there was any other message. Clearly I was close. I almost had it.

The Answer

Within days my considerable intuition delivered. “Move back to Chicago,” she said. I told her she was nuts. “Are you sure?” Like Tevye having conversations with God in Fiddler on the Roof, we kibitzed and I oy-ed. I called my niece Dawn (closest relative to the daughter I never had) and told her I was seriously considering it. Within less than 24 hours, I was 100% sure that it was what I had to do. It was what I wanted to do. It was right and holy. And yes, I’d freeze my ass off in winter, but that’s why they make long underwear. If Covid taught me anything, it’s that I don’t even have to leave the house when conditions are not friendly to my health and well-being. Deliveries and human connection are all at my fingertips right at home. Since I am retired from a “real” job, I don’t have to go out unless it’s urgent. I can be a bear and hibernate all winter, something we all need and rarely do. And it’s a great time to read and write. Modern caves are even equipped with central heat.

The move made sense for so many pragmatic reasons, but those who know me on these pages and/or in person should not be surprised; it was the pull of my Cosmic Tractor Beam that motivated me most of all. I was being dragged with irresistible force to the place and the answer to “what’s next.” I just had to follow, to practice non-resistance. Whenever I aligned with the Beam in the past, everything ended well. This would be no different even if my Virgo self-doubt confronted me nearly every day during the process.

Beam Me Up, Scotty

It’s pretty hilarious that my Beam was activated by a genuine Scotsman in Andrew Johnson. It  took nearly a year to get from idea to manifestation of my move. (Covid limited air travel, and I had major work to do on my house in California to make it sale-ready.) I  finally realized that the reason I could not picture my future after Tim passed is that I had limited my scope to Sacramento. I could not see it because my future wasn’t there. I am aging. I am a widow. My immediate family is gone. I need to be near my large extended family of nieces, nephews and dozens of cousins. My family of friends in Sacramento is a dream come true, and because of them, I will always have two homes, especially after 4+ decades and three careers operating out of California’s capital (civil servant in State recycling programs, astrologer and writer). I just switched which home is primary. The one that was made for me in my birth chart in the beginning and likely until the end.

Many people thought I was brave to make such a major move in my 70s, but the really brave move was when I was 26 during the ‘70s. I moved to Sacramento where I didn’t know a soul and just followed a strong hunch. I did not yet understand my Cosmic Tractor Beam pulling me to parts unknown, but oddly, I trusted this unseen and unidentified force. Making my California dream come true was not an easy transition. I was living and working for 4 years in Green Bay, Wisconsin before I moved and the culture shock was major. There were many life skills in my twenties that I had not yet acquired and would be forced to scrape up in a hurry to survive. But I have Uranus on the IC when my chart is relocated to Sacramento. "The Big Tomato" is where I found my spiritual family and the place I could experiment with the alternative ideas that fascinated and fed me, including astrology. Most of my immediate family followed me there within a few years. As I became more and more New Age-ish, my sister said I “went California.” I’m a Virgo; I had to correct her. “No, I just went to a place where I could be me.”

How It All Turned Out

I will skip over most of the details except for a few. I could not have sold my house in California at a better time on Mother’s Day 2021. The market was high and I got a great price which allowed me to make the expensive, cross-country move and to replace the many things I could not realistically take with me. After nearly a year of looking, I found a beautiful home in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago, 7 minutes from my niece Dawn’s in an award-winning community. My vet nixed tranquilizing and flying my little black cat Kira cross-country. (I would have shipped my car.) The altitude can affect the uptake of the drug and is dangerous, potentially even fatal. (And believe me, Kira would have screamed so much; flying without sedation was not an option.) So we went on a family road trip. Dawn’s daughter, my grandniece Ashley, did the driving while Ashley’s daughter Ana and I took turns keeping Kira out of mischief, mainly out of the driver's way. To my great surprise, I found out that my little fur girl loves the open road. It’s just stop-and-start driving that she hates, thus the yodeling all the way to the vet. She did her mom proud.

The Here and Wow.

Rebirthday: 22-Sept-21

While no one place holds everything for us as individuals, I could not have imagined the joy I have experienced moving back home. “Place of Birth” is no longer a simple a piece astrological data on which my chart is built. Being in my birthplace returns me to my natural horoscope where my most angular and theoretically influential planet is Mars in Cancer on the IC (trine Jupiter in Scorpio). I used to see t-shirts that said, “You can take the girl out of Chicago, but you can’t take Chicago out of the girl. Little did I know how much I embodied that idea. Or the t-shirt I actually own, “I’m just a Chicago girl living in a California world.” Until I was back in Chi-Town experiencing my favorite season of autumn, I never realized that this thing called birthplace is visceral for me. Here I had my first feelings of climate on baby skin, environment and “home,” long before I had the language to describe it. Chicago is in me. It is me. It is an environmental and magnetic geographic force that pulls my molecules and energy together in a certain way, at a certain frequency. There is much to explore for future articles on the influence of birthplace, whether you live in yours or not.

But at the most personal level, everything I ever wanted is here. My eyes frequently well up over how happy I am. All my dreams have come true in this place—of a big family, a beautiful home, fun, culture and lots of people who love me and love to hang out with me and make the time to do it. The big family didn’t exactly happen in the timing and way I had in mind, but there are advantages. I didn’t have to raise my grandnieces or nephews or send them to college. I still get to enjoy them to the hilt and vice-versa. Auntie Mame has already moved over. There is nothing like hearing my 7-year-old Aquarian great grandniece spontaneously yell from the backseat of the car, “I love you!” When I found my birth mom in 1988, she took to calling me Miti Manifesto. Miti (Me Tee) was her nickname for me, short for my birth name Maria Teresa. Birth mom Helen marveled at how I manifested things, including her after a 38-year separation by adoption.

Combining my Manifesto persona with one of my others, the Queen of Synchronicity, I materialized a piece of artwork that paints a picture of why it’s good to surrender to your Cosmic Tractor Beam. (See opening photo.) It is a gorgeous dream catcher batik in teals and soft blues and warm browns. It is the emblem of how I did as I was told and the Beam caught everything for me in the web of the dream catcher and brought me here to them. (So that's what my intuition meant by The Cusp of Everything!) The dream catcher hangs in my living room in the most prominent position in my home. It will be a constant reminder of why it’s good to get out of your own way and stay open to the universe’s other ideas for you. They may even be your own ideas with a slight twist that's even better than you imagined.

Astrology’s Place and Future Directions

Enough about me! (Sun in the 5th.) What does this new and deep re-rooting mean for my blog, my writing and the things that might entertain and inspire you? I’m not yet totally certain. The Beam has yet to clarify. But I know I am getting close. Throughout all my ordeals of recent years, astrology has not been as prominent as usual in my life. At least not in the way it used to be of analyzing every event and development by planetary positions in the sky. Astrology is much more integrated for me now, a kind of touchstone and inner knowing that no longer drives my perceptions of life but is simply a part of them. There is culture shock here, too. I’m not in California anymore, where even the most skeptical person knows enough metaphysical lingo and ideas and has the manners not to eye roll. My relatives are quick learners, though. They now speak of Mercury Retrograde in hushed tones and the younger ones are very meta-curious.

I expect the Radical Virgo blog to morph even more into its “astrology-plus” direction with more theme posts and possibly even spin-off blogs or writings on larger topic areas. My first big writing project is a book. It's a memoir, My Life in the Lost and Found: The Power of Reconnection. I am 5 chapters in and plan to work on it this winter while the weather is rude. There may be other installments in the Micki Michaels  novels, my humorous mystery series, but later rather than sooner.

Although I wrote a book called The Crystal Ball, I don’t have one. Just a Cosmic Tractor Beam that's sometimes full of surprises. Stay tuned for the next ones.

Saved by the Sun

A Summer Solstice Poem
Poem © 2020 by Joyce Mason

Sun:
The original god
proves his power
to his worshippers.
Every summer he boils us in our own oils
add a little Coppertone.
At the Equinox he merges
with the Moon’s natural sign Cancer
at the light fest Summer Solstice.

This turning point:
A time for merging Light and Dark
within our split selves knowing
we just can’t live without each other.
We have to own it
stop throwing our shadows at others
like a Molotov Cocktail.
not even a refreshing drink
in this heat.

Hot Summer Sun:
A cosmic floodlight and spyglass
to all our secrets.
burns away all the things we hide
saves us from ourselves
with the strength of acceptance
and love of our Selves--
the best summer romance ever.

Spring Chickens: A Vernal Equinox Poem

Poem © 2020 by Joyce Mason

Deep inside me
seeds are desperate to crack open
as the Sun warms the earth a bit longer
every day
inching to the Equinox.

The seedlings are chicks pecking at eggshells
from the inside out.
New hopes, dreams, goals, changes:
Resolutions to revolutions.

No one knows what work it takes
to mount or withstand this energetic build-up.
It’s dark, jabbing into the unknown.
It is disconnection and disorientation at their cruelest.

Yet one day like the Tortoise and the Hare,
the slow chicklets of resurrection
crack the shell as we do the crust of our winter malaise.

Like the slow results of escape with inadequate tools,
We make our jailbreak.
All heaven breaks loose.
Holy Aries!

Uranian Intimacy

A Valentine for People with Planets in Aquarius or Aspects to Uranus

© 2019 by Joyce Mason

Welcome, fellow weirdos! We know who we are and why we can’t give up who we are, even for our sweet dream of belonging. We are the people with planets in Aquarius or close aspects with Uranus. We are ahead of our time, hear a different drummer—or as my late husband used to say in extreme cases; some people hear a whole different orchestra. (Uranians could use some new metaphors. These are getting old, and you know how we hate that.)

Like most people who are on a different wavelength from the general public, I have spent my life trying to figure out how to fit in while retaining my own unique identity. Sound familiar? Recently I had the pleasure of traveling home to Chicago and spending time with many friends and family that still live where I grew up. I had been unable to travel for years due to my husband’s care needs. As Tim got close to passing last year, I began getting strong feelings about spending more time in my original home sweet homeland. In fact the sensation was so strong; I wondered if I was getting a cosmic nudge to move back after 46 years in Sacramento.

Two weeks in the cold climate and I was over any ideas of moving, but I discovered many interesting things about intimacy on this trip. First, being adopted, I was reminded that all my formative relationships were based on heart and mind connections. There were no biological likenesses to feed my sense of belonging. But I have to say, I never even recognized that I was different in some essential ways from my relatives until I was in my twenties. To their credit, my family never made any distinctions about me based on adoption. I was one of them. In fact, I was in utter shock and disbelief when, at 8 years old, I learned that my parents weren’t my biological mom and dad.

My family was as loving as I could possibly imagine. Then why did I still feel somewhat like a misfit? One thing is clear. It wasn’t them; it was me.

We all have needs on a continuum of independence to interdependence. On top of that, sometimes those needs shift at different times in our lives. Like many things in my life and chart loaded with Libra planets,  I am generally split almost down the middle on that scale—until something of substance comes up and I have to tell my truth or suffer severe cognitive dissonance, a great discomfort, when what I believe and do are not in harmony. Integrity might as well be my middle name. I cannot abide doing anything but “what’s right” according to my own inner compass. In those times when my truth is tested, I’d say go from 51% indie and 49% inter to 75/25, high on the side of independence.

Why are we so scared of being ourselves, especially when we’re a bit unusual or on the far ends of the bell curve? Rejection, of course, made more obvious by certain early life experiences like the sense of abandonment that comes naturally with adoption. I feel like a bell weather on this issue. Will they still love me if they know the “real me?” Worse yet, will they love me and leave me?

The truth is, it is impossible for anyone to really love you unless or until they know the real you. Warts and all. After seven decades of living, I have discovered that most truths are conundrums. They are paradoxical. Acceptance is one of the biggest paradoxes of all.
Second point of vacation learning: We saw the Disney animated version of The Adams Family. Expecting something a little scary (is this OK for my five-year-old great grandniece?), all of us were pleasantly surprised at how sweet it was and what a powerful statement it made about belonging and accepting differences.

To blurb the plot without giving away too much (it’s a must-see), there’s a real estate agent bent on creating a homogenous community full of Stepford- like compliance, using all kinds of questionable methods to ensure conformity. Enter the oddball Adams Family who takes over the deserted insane asylum on the hill. Through a series of interactions and exposure to one another, the paradoxical truth is revealed. Conformity doesn’t lead to great community. Each person being who they are, with acceptance by others, does that. To get acceptance, you’ve got to give it.

Think of every small town you see on your favorite TV shows. (Examples of mine are Stars Hallow in Gilmore Girls, Cabot Cove on Murder She Wrote, and Cicely on Northern Exposure.) The characters are quirky, some of them truly annoying, and all of them in their way pretty lovable once you get to know them. This ideal is presented to us in show after show. It is achievable. We just have to quit being scared of people who are different from us. Do we really want Stepford lives—or the adventure of discovering all kinds of interesting people and ideas?

Besides our concerns about being rejected, what other fears drive leaving others out? Many people do a lot of work to form their lives around a certain worldview. People whose very being challenges some of our foundational beliefs feel threatening. (What if I’ve got it wrong? What would be the domino effect on reorganizing my life?) Yet how else do we learn about our options? As a bumper sticker popular with Unitarians at the church I used to attend states, “To question is the answer.” The quote “Religion is the opioid of the masses” does not refer to all people who have religion. It refers to those who buy religion hook, line and sinker, without using the blessing of their brains to examine what parts of the chapter and verse are truths for them personally and what parts they can leave alone. Nothing is one size fits all. No religion. No philosophy. Are the hardliners lazy and change-o-phobes? Maybe. But you can choose not to be one.

My Catholic background is the foundation of all the spirituality that has enriched my life, even though I am not religious. Jesus hung out with lepers, whores, the dirt poor and treated everyone with love and respect. (And to those you may encounter with anti-Semitic leanings, a reminder that he was a practicing Jew who did not invent Christianity. People after him did that. And did I mention his dark skin?) WWJD (What Would Jesus Do) is still a pretty good thing to ask yourself regardless of your beliefs. The story may be ancient, but his message was for the future—a vision of the people we could be if we open our hearts, mind and ears.

The biggest challenge for intimacy for Uranians is to become so comfortable with yourself; you just go into situations without hesitation and carry on. You don’t have to put your differences in anyone’s face to prove something. You just have to love yourself first and others will follow.

But what if they don’t? I am not so naïve or airy-fairy to believe that we can love ‘n’ light everyone into seeing how much more alike we are than different. Some relationships demand to be let go—the toxic ones, the draining ones, the ones that diminish us. There is nothing sadder than an adult who is still broken-hearted that the fairy tale family is not theirs. This is a hard disappointment to overcome. When we do, we create our own family of friends. I am living proof that you don’t have to be related by biology to be family.

Finally, one more truth, another conundrum. To get along with others, you have to get along with all the different parts of yourself. This takes work—getting over perfectionism, talking yourself out of putting yourself down, even in the middle of what the world defines as a major failure.

Uranians are supposed to be afraid of intimacy. There is nothing more intimate than forgiving yourself your trespasses and oddities. Maybe the sometimes “distant” behavior of Uranians and Aquarians is just a council meeting of their complex parts. They have a lot of segments of themselves to check in with, and while they’re at it, maybe one of those bolts of insight they are also famous for may come out of their “parts exchange” at the summit.

And, besides, ever wonder why Valentine’s Day occurs when the Sun is in Aquarius? Everyone has something to learn about love from those Uranian inner summit meetings. It’s called integration, respect and equality for every aspect of yourself. A really great foundation for being able to do that for all the parts of another person.

Incubation

A Winter Solstice Poem
© 2019 by Joyce Mason

I have felt you
Deep in the dark
Seeds gather energy in tiny spaces,

Incognito ‘til spring
The pressure intensifying bit by bit
Bursting like fireworks through soil
at the Vernal Equinox.
But you’d never know ‘til then.
The action is invisible above ground.

We are babes in the womb this time of year.
Our winter seeds are review and renewal,
Rest and letting go--
Quiet “just being.”

Seedlings are whole-y,
Inching their way in the dark
To completion.
We need full gestation at its own pace
To have all our fingers, toes and wits about us.
If we don’t incubate bread, it’s half-baked.
If we don’t incubate spiritual renewal
We are simply in the dark, parts of ourselves undeveloped,
Not prepared for the Natural New Year as Pisces turns Aries.

Hug the dark and wear winter like a warm coat.
Protect your growth
and your soul’s full flower.
You’re worth the wait.

Pisces into Aries: A Spring Equinox Poem

Poem © 2019 by Joyce Mason

The winter knot in my stomach:
A tight bulb
putting out shoots as the rains come.
The weather is seductive,
flaunting bursts of sun and shirtsleeves.
Spring is alluring in the final days
of the Dark of Winter.
A tease.

I begin to see green things in my dreams
sprouting from my eyes, ears and other openings.
Sometimes they dare to bud and laugh at me.
I hide under my down comforter in a flash frozen moment,
teeth chattering in tempo with the gauzy sights and maniacal sounds.

As Pisces peaks
I crave music and meditation
but like Aries itself, I cannot muster patience
even from Bliss.
Want. Spring. Now.

And while I’m distracted
trying to figure out my overactive night movies,
Spring dashes in from behind,
nearly Equi-obnoxious,
soon racing far out front.
I am left in a wake of stardust,
post-morning coffee eyes
and Get Up and Go.

Now that’s awakening.

Prelude to Winter

Poem © 2018 by Joyce Mason

I have felt you in my bones
shivering in darkness
the lights-off trial run
after turning back the clocks.

You warn in a stage whisper,
Do not turn your back on me.
Don’t hide from the black tunnel.
It is the rebirth canal.

And so we draw ourselves in
working up our courage and energy
to put a toe in the bleak chute.

There we must live on the faint sound of carols,
on memories of flickering candles.
Faith is our sustenance,
our light at the end of the tunnel,
the spring that always follows winter
like clockwork
regardless of daylight savings time.

Autumn/Fall Seesaw

Poem ©2018 by Joyce Mason

Wiping the sweat of Virgo off my brow,
I flash back to summer: fast growth, Sun and Moon rulers chasing their unruly children into new experiences on life’s playground.

I stop, breathe in all the blues and blessings of the last season.
Sit for me on the other side of Libra’s Scale.
Balance with me, the ups and downs of this teeter-totter life.
Watch your growth whiz by in the replay.

Take a deep breath, exhale and make room for what’s to come:
autumn, such beauty it borders on pain.
The heart-expanding Season of Gratitude melting into the Rebirth of Light.

This seesaw, Zodiac Circle always perfect if we have the eyes
to see what we saw.

The Wheel of Heal

Chiron, Scorpio, Band-Aids, Bactine and Antibiotics

Healing is the process of becoming sound or whole again.

From a fusion of definitions on healing

We are all part of the Great Wheel of Heal. Life itself, as depicted by the seasons and the zodiac, is the Constant Wheel of Change. It isn’t forever spring and summer. There is autumn, where at the peak of beauty and bounty, we “lose our leaves” and begin fading into winter, a time of dormancy and pseudo-death.

Wellness—even joy—come from being in sync with these seasons of change, not just surrendering to them but celebrating them. And I don’t just mean the literal seasons. I mean changes in every moment of every day. In Chinese medicine, wellness is all about energy flow, the movement of chi. This supports the idea that to be well and whole is to move with the energy of the moment. As Eckhart Tolle calls it in his seminal book, it’s the Power of Now. And that power heals—makes whole again—or finally. It is about being hospitable to what is.

One of the most healing statements we make that has become a popular saying nowadays when dealing with a difficult situation expresses the healing gold standard: “It is what it is.”

There is a lot to this idea of healing, acceptance and energy flow, but I think it’s easiest to start with a visual of people in a park doing t’ai chi or qigong. They are learning to bend to the flow of their energy, to let it flow through them and awaken them. I have gotten as much healing from a qigong session as an acupuncture treatment. These centuries-old healing modalities are steeped in wisdom and the reality of what works.

To bring astrology and its cousin mythology into it, let’s talk a bit about Chiron.

Chiron: Surgeon and Vocational Counselor

Some people might find Chiron’s jobs on Mt. Pelion in ancient Greece to be a bit of an odd combination. He was a surgeon, herbalist and mentor of heroes. As a hero maker, he honed the special skills of each of his mythical charges. He prepared them to use those talents in the world to help themselves and others. Chiron was quite literally a vocational counselor.

For instance, Hercules had strength and Asclepius had medical skills. Forget the dough in do what you love and the money will follow. Chiron knew that doing what you love is the real gold, the key to wholeness for both individual and community. Doing what you love and are good at is simply another way of going with the flow. You are who you are, and you are simply being yourself. Interesting how difficult it is for most human beings to fathom that being yourself is not only enough; it’s the one thing you can do to feel at one with yourself and everyone else. If you’ve had the experience of those magic moments where you’re “on,” being 100% you, you know there’s nothing in the world like that feeling. It is electrifying. No circuits are jammed, no energy flow is constrained. You are a pure expression of universal spirit humming in your own skin.

The Lemonade Stand.  Perhaps of all the keywords that unlock Chiron, my favorite phrase is, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Wholeness asks one simple thing from us. Accept what-is and find the good in it, the life flow. There are many things in life we can have considerable influence molding. And then there are the monkey wrenches, the unexpected slings and arrows that, at first blush, look like they are derailing our plans and direction. Often they are giving us a side trip to bigger more important lessons. They come with those “difficult” transits. They are invitations to your next level of mastery. Sometimes they demand that we put everything aside that mattered to us in order to focus on something we didn’t even know we needed to learn or do. In that sense they are shocking. (Do you smell outer planets here?) Your energy is full-boar in one direction and bam! Roadblock, detour—construction zone.

Surgeon. Mythology is one of the main sources for interpreting astrological meanings. Why would Chiron be a surgeon? Sometimes energy flow is blocked, backs up and gets obstructed. At times the only cure is to remove the block or diseased tissue, bone, cells—whatever—in order to make the body whole again. Surgery comes in when other methods fail to restore the flow. This is the part of Chiron’s work that was Scorpio-tinged and why Chiron is connected with holistic medicine. Natural methods, when woven with man-made technology, help to achieve optimal wellness. Another Chiron key phrase comes to mind: It’s not either/or. It’s both/and.

Herbalist. Similarly, why was Chiron a natural pharmacist? We are surrounded with substances
for the picking that contribute to harmonious energy flow. I had the most interesting conversation this past week with a woman in her 70s who has had multiple medical conditions since the 1970s, including epilepsy and lupus. She was supposed to be gone long ago, but here she is, still full of spirit. Our conversation was about how marijuana has helped her enormously and how many people in California are now accessing the cannabis pharmacies since it became legal. “It grows everywhere on Earth,” she said. “God put it here to help us heal.” It makes sense to me along with countless other herbs, often gentler in their natural state than drugs derived from them that must be modified to be patented. Yet we don’t want to ignore modern pharmaceuticals because they are sometimes the thing that restores energy flow better than others. It’s all about balance—and a balance constantly moves before it reaches a point of temporary stasis.

Community: Your Personal Wheel of Heal

During recent years, both my husband and I have had major healing crises. I like to observe how healing works when I’m not calling the Fire Department or an ambulance, having a surgery, or putting on Band-Aids and Bactine. Lately Transiting Chiron has been opposite my Sun. I believe oppositions help us have clear views of planetary energies because they are right across the table from us where we can see them best and how they operate.

One of my major communities is Facebook. I talk about Facebook wisdom—inspiring sayings and posts—and I love the ability to reach out to others to share both joyful and stressful times. I saw a fascinating article about the role of Facebook in helping people grieve. Here are some other articles on social media and grief—but social media friends also are a balm for healing from medical conditions, surgeries, broken hearts and all kinds of other dis-ease. For those who are isolated or somewhat so, forums like this provide a connection that is essential to becoming whole again.
Back to Chiron for a moment, while he provided plenty of one-on-one mentoring and instruction, his heroes in training were at a coming-of-age boot camp on Mt. Pelion. Just like any other troopers about to take on life, they must have bonded deeply with their “platoon” and found support in their special school for growing heroes. And do the rest of us life warriors.

“Don’t feel like the Lone Ranger.” When we interrupt someone’s isolation during a major life challenge to share or own similar stories, both the teller and listener heal. This is the essence of healing—to eradicate a sense of aloneness. The original dis-ease is feeling disconnected from Source. It is our fear that Source—God/Goddess, All That Is, however you see Higher Power—has abandoned us. With others to share the journey of healing, the Source in others is the light that heals. Many people sharing this light at a time of crisis is as sacred and comforting as a full installation of votive candles in any church.

Chiron and Prometheus. After 30 years of studying Chiron, I am still learning new things about the part of the Chiron myth where the centaur-healer trade places with Prometheus. Promie was chained to a rock for eternity for having the gall to steal fire from the gods. Every night an eagle pecked out Prometheus’s liver, a painful suffering. Every morning, it had grown back for a vicious cycle of misery.

Chiron offered to trade places with Prometheus, since he was suffering himself anyway with his incurable wound. What does that mean? Are we really supposed to suffer for other people?
I have come to see this more as a reminder that your suffering is mine and mine is yours. We all suffer. It’s about compassion and when I was in your shoes, chained to your rock. Pain is universal. In sharing our experiences with suffering, we are lifted up, we divide our sorrow. The gods were so impressed with Chiron’s generosity in pinch hitting for Prometheus, after three days they lifted Chiron up to the sky in a constellation, breaking his bonds of immortality and ending his pain. We lift up others by sharing painful or scary experiences. We want to relieve the pain because it’s human suffering—a piece of all our pain.

Compassion: Feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune, along with a strong desire to alleviate the suffering.

In astrology Prometheus is the mythical character most often associated with the planet Uranus and society. The rebellion that Uranians are famous for is often the spark of genius that moves us forward as a civilization. Unfortunately, those that want to keep the status quo and their place in the existing power structure often punish those living on the leading edge. They could be the people behind the next cancer breakthrough or the newest application of machines to healing. Others may have at one time thought them crazy or criminals, but the great healer Chiron knew they were the leaven in the loaf, the essential ingredient to make new ways of healing rise up. They had to be free to be themselves, too.

We can’t leave others on the block to suffer alone because we are too busy to get involved. Being part of the Wheel of Heal, whether the community is our neighborhood, social media networks or family, is a ritual reenactment of our own suffering that redeems us. (Do you hear a Christian parallel here?) Remember that Chiron volunteered, as did Jesus. As we must.

May compassion and lightening the load of all suffering eventually be as easy for you as all other ways of being there for others—in sickness and in health.
