Sun

Poem © 2016 by Joyce Mason

The genetic dice rolled darkness,
a sensitive artsy raw-nerve daughter.
But Nature, abhorring a vacuum,
drenched me with sunlight to balance
a tendency to brood:
My Father, My Sun.

Reborn three weeks later
in the courthouse,
You and Mom petitioned to be
my parents:
Sun, Moon and Neptune conjunct
in Libra
Symbols of the scales of balance
everywhere:
My Father, My Sun.

You won the draw of the straw.
You gave me all my names.
“I love your name because it has joy in it.”
My husband, like my father, with their Leo Lights:
My Father and Husband, My Sun.

I still tend to live with drapes closed
and love the night.
He loves skylights and curtainless windows.
My Husband, shades of My Father, My Sun.

My Husband, no better father to our fur children
even looks like My Father.
One gone, one remains bringing Sun to my days.
I am even starting to love the dawn.
My Father, My Husband, My Sun.

Hey Joyce,
what do you think about the Blue Full Moon/Solstice on the 20th?

Hi, Libra Moon!

What a powerful Summer Solstice! The first thing that hit me was the "full moon-ness" of a woman finally becoming the presidential nominee of a major political party in the US. The last Full/Blue Moon on May 21 was an omen. (Just add a W to that word and modify the spelling slightly and you have woman.) A woman candidate in this country is about as rare as a Blue Moon and a major party presidential nominee--the rarest, a first. Astronomers would not call the Full Moon on Solstice/June 20 a Blue Moon (though astrologers would. See below). Some sources call it the Strawberry Moon. I found something interesting on Journeying to the Goddess blog:

"The Farmer’s Almanac tells us that June’s full moon is known as the Strawberry Moon. This name was universal to every Algonquin tribe. However, in Europe they called it the Rose Moon. Also because the relatively short season for harvesting strawberries comes each year during the month of June . . . so the full Moon that occurs during that month was christened for the strawberry."

I drew from this material the idea that this is a "short season" or a short window for meeting this women's equality milestone that has been building for a century or more. Meant to be, in sync with the rarity of a Blue Strawberry Moon! Although July 20 is not a Blue Moon according to the technical, astronomical definition; it's the 2nd consecutive Full Moon in the same sign. Astrologers call that a Blue Moon, too. (Great material on Blue Moon Astrology by Elaine Kalantarian.)

Forgive my long-windedness, but your question brings so much together for me. Donald Trump was born on a Full Moon with a Sun/Gemini and Moon/Sag opposition in his chart, just like this double Blue Moon pair. The issues of information versus knowledge and truth are constantly in the news. I see the country at a real turning point in both the US Presidential election (which we certainly saw this week) and in the “return of the Goddess.” However, I’m with those who believe that this isn’t the time for matriarchy or patriarchy; it’s the time for humanity and balancing all oppositions. What an exciting time to be alive, especially to witness people being mad as hell and not taking it anymore about inequities of all kinds. We're in the rebirth canal.

Thanks for asking and giving me a chance to gather my thoughts around the Moon repeating itself. The time has come to call attention to truth and our core beliefs. And to walk our talk.

Blessings,
Joyce
